The other modes are unlocked as you beat each previous difficulty.Courageous: You must first complete the game on Adventurous. A character level of 24-25 is recommended. Champion: You must first complete the game on Courageous.
A character level of 46-65 is recommended. Legendary: You must first complete the game on Champion. A character level of 65+ is recommended. Items and Levels As you progress through the dungeons of Return to Arms your strength is determined by the level of your character, how your skill points have been distributed, and the quality of your items.

In between your mana and health bar which appear in the upper left hand corner of the screen there is an experience bar which when full results in a level up. Killing enemies not only grants players experience but they also drop an assortment of armor and weapons. Make sure to pick up everything that drops to the ground. Even if the equipment is lousy, you can use a gate scroll and sell it back to the shop. Besides items and money, you will want to keep your eye out for green and blue potion bottles which represent health and mana potions. We Are the Champions On top of the five character classes from the original Champions game there are now the Iksar Shamans (Lizards) and Vah Shir Berserkers (Cats).
You have the option to customize the appearance of each character and choose the gender of the original five classes. Appearance and gender have no effect on game play. For each character you will have 20 points that can be added to Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity, and Stamina.
Strength - Melee damage and carrying capacity. Intelligence - Increases Mana and mana regeneration. Dexterity - Increases ranged attack damage and the ability to hit with all weapons. Stamina - Increases total health and health regeneration. Iksar Shaman Strength: 26 Intelligence: 37 Dexterity: 24 Stamina: 28 Advantages: This class regenerates health faster than the other races. It summons spirits that help it during battle.
Disadvantages: Because it relies on spiritual attacks, it lacks some skill in melee combat. Vah Shir Berserker Strength: 32 Intelligence: 22 Dexterity: 31 Stamina: 30 Advantages: The Berserkers are good melee fighters but leave themselves open to enemy attacks more than the other fighters. This defensive weakness is balanced by their ability to throw axes. Disadvantages: Often leave themselves open to melee attacks. Other Qualities: The Berserker is a nice blend of a ranged fighter and warrior. One of their higher level abilities includes dual wielding, making their melee attacks as useful as their throwing axes. Barbarian Warrior Strength: 35 Intelligence: 20 Dexterity: 25 Stamina: 35 Advantages: A straight foward warrior.
They can use any weapon type and gain mana by slaughtering their foes. Disadvantages: Mana does not regenerate when characters are resting. Wood Elf Ranger Strength: 28 Intelligence: 25 Dexterity: 35 Stamina: 27 Advantages: Wood Elves are masters of the bow. Combine this with their average melee capabilities to creat the most well rounded character. Disadvantages: You will have to pick and choose when to get up close with the enemy.
Close proximity means that their bow skills are almost useless. High Elf Cleric Strength: 26 Intelligence: 36 Dexterity: 27 Stamina: 26 Advantages: This class combines melee attacks with magical ability. Some spells effect team memebers and others will crush undead opponents. Disadvantages: They can only use blunt weapons.

Erudite Wizard Strength: 23 Intelligence: 39 Dexterity: 25 Stamina: 28 Advantages: As indicated by their name, these charaters are magic users. Their spells are perfect for ranged and group attacks and they can enchant weapons with elemental energy. Disadvantages: They are vulnerable in close combat and are not able to use many weapons. They are also barred from using a shield. Dark Elf Shadow Knight Strength: 28 Intelligence: 30 Dexterity: 27 Stamina: 30 Advantages: These elven warriors are proficient in ranged magic attacks.
They can also enchant weapons with elemental powers. Disadvantages: Wizards rely on magic and are helpless when it comes to up close melee combat. They are not able to use shields so you will want to keep them a good distance from the enemy.
